Reflections on State Solo and Ensemble!

My wife got the 2010 Washington State Solo and Ensemble results yesterday and I thought they were good information in light of our conversation about arts programs and small schools.Global Connections students placed #1 in the state in trumpet and #1 in tuba solo. They also had the #2 small brass ensemble and a superior composite rating in large brass ensembles. (Superior is the highest ranking that doesn't make the top 3 in the state.)Mt. Rainier had a superior in French horn solo and in small…See More

Initial thoughts from Superintendent Welch

I shared the current draft of our recommendations with Superintendent Welch and, per your request (with his permisison), am posting his thoughts here.Comments on the Recommendations#1 and 2. John feels equity and culture are really important parts of our report and recommendations. For example, previous suggestions to the board regarding music contained similar recommendations to our list (arts supervisor, funding, CBPAs, etc.), but did not address cultural considerations. The board wants that…See More

Speaking of standards

I wanted to add a bit to the conversation that was started in the email message below. I view the situation regarding state standards and double dosing as a little more nuanced. I don't see it as a yes/no, black/white proposition. While one person may see a second math class as denying a student access to a core academic area (arts), I wonder if a math teacher might feel that we are denying access to another core area (math) by requiring a student who is failing math to take an arts course. That…See More

Seattle Times Guest Editorial on Arts Education

I think you'll enjoy this opinion piece in the Seattle Times on the need for arts education in Washington State. It's authored by Susan Coliton of Paul Allen's foundation and Pat Wasley, retiring dean of the UW College of Education. http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/opinion/2011627643_guest19coliton.html

CLARIFICATION - I just wanted to note that under the question "What do you like about arts education in your school?" there is a reply in the Parkside column that begins with "Not a darn thing!" But that comment was made by a…

Update on Feedback Sessions

I wanted to update you on the feedback we've been gathering from staff, parents, and community.Yesterday, we had an envigorating evening meeting with parents and community! Between 40 and 50 people attended and all were passionate advocates for the arts. Among the participants were Latino parents who Carmen from the Latino Parent Advisory Group helped to recruit to the meeting. It was a wonderful night. Our turnout for teacher meetings was light, but we had great conversations with about 15…See More

My first suggestion is that every effort be made to make sure that the Highline Summer Arts Academy stays alive. Our program has been in existence for the past ten years and in that period of time, we have provided a high quality arts experience for…
